Tonight, I attempted "night" photography for the first time. I put my camera on a tripod in front of the house with a SS of 30 seconds. I then ran from one side of the house to the other and popped my SB-800 speedlight. 
For this shot, I programmed my SB-800 and placed it under my porch steps. I had my D80 on Manual, popped the flash and captured the exposure.

i read somewhere tonight...dont wear white...wear black...then you wont even be seen if you run across while the shutter is open!
